  1. Microsoft is kicking off this week with a duo of new Windows 11 preview builds. Those in the Dev Channel received build 26200.5622 (KB5058512), which introduces several improvements and new features, including a new way to recover from boot issues, widget improvements, new features for Click to Do, and more. Users with Copilot+ PCs can now try a new Click to Do feature. It lets you click a sentence in an email or any other portion of text on your screen and click "Draft with Copilot in Word" to create a document based on the selected text and your instructions. Note that this feature requires a Microsoft 365 subscription. Also, Click to Do now supports French and Spanish languages for the rewriting tool, and text actions are now available in German, Italian, and Portuguese. Next is the big one. Quick Machine Recovery now has its own section in the Settings app. Announced at Ignite 2024, this feature lets you quickly resolve boot issues by applying fixes and patches within the Windows Recovery Environment. The new page enables you to check and configure the status of QMR. Windows Insiders can try QMR in action with test mode. Windows Widgets now feature multiple boards, allowing you to switch between widget-only view and a mix of widgets and news. Other changes include the following: The "Open with" dialog now displays app recommendations, allowing you to discover more apps that support the selected file. Phone Link now groups notifications in the start menu and lets you initiate screen mirroring (Android-only) with a single click. Connected iPhones can also display memories and recently synced photos. The Settings app now has a better alignment for the search bar on Copilot+ PCs, redesigned dialogs for entering your product key, troubleshooting activation, phone activation, and retail demo to match the Windows 11 visuals. Also, there is now a new Device Card for the Home page where you can see a brief rundown of your PC's specs. Now, here is what was fixed (these fixes are rolling out gradually): The following fixes are rolling out for improved Windows Search on Copilot+ PCs: Fixed an underlying crash causing semantic indexing to not work for some Insiders in the last couple flights. [Start menu] There have been some underlying improvements which should help address the issue where clicking your profile picture wasn’t opening the Account Manager for some Insiders after the latest flights. If you’re continuing to experience issues, please file feedback. Fixed an issue causing Start menu to crash on launch for some Insiders in the latest flights. [File Explorer] Fixed an issue where if you opened the “…” menu in the File Explorer address bar to show the full list of folders for the current path, the dropdown might be cut off and the bottom of it inaccessible. Fixed an issue which was causing File Explorer to crash doing various actions in the latest flights, including when deleting files for some Insiders. Fixed an issue where the recommended section in File Explorer wasn’t expanding when using the right arrow key. Fixed an issue which could lead to duplicate access keys in the File Explorer context menu. The following are fixes for AI actions in File Explorer: Fixed the issue where the action result canvas displayed text from left to right for AI actions for Microsoft 365 files w [Task Manager] Fixed an issue where after adding the new CPU Utility column, you might notice that System Idle Process always showed as 0. Fixed an issue where the CPU graphs in the Performance page were still using the old CPU utility calculations. [Narrator] Fixed an issue where the Describe image feature of narrator wasn’t working. [Voice Access] Fixed an issue where support for more descriptive and flexible language on Copilot+ PCs wasn’t working as expected. [Settings] Fixed an underlying issue related to Bluetooth which could cause Settings or Quick Settings to crash on launch for some people. Fixed an issue with Quick Settings where if you clicked the top third of the buttons in the top row, it wouldn’t work. [Other] Fixed an issue with msftedit.dll which was causing apps like Sticky Notes and Dxdiag to crash in certain cases for people using Hebrew or Arabic display languages. And there is a single fix that is available for everyone in the Dev Channel: [General] We have mitigated the issue where if Virtualization Based Security is enabled, applications dependent on virtualization, such as VMware Workstation, would lose the ability to run unless the “Windows Hypervisor Platform” Windows optional component is installed on the system. Finally, here is the list of known bugs: [General] After you do a PC reset under Settings > System > Recovery, your build version may incorrectly show as Build 26100 instead of Build 26200. This will not prevent you from getting future Dev Channel updates, which will resolve this issue. The option to reset your PC under Settings > System > Recovery will not work on this build. [Xbox Controllers] Some Insiders are experiencing an issue where using their Xbox Controller via Bluetooth is causing their PC to bugcheck. Here is how to resolve the issue. Open Device Manager by searching for it via the search box on your taskbar. Once Device Manager is open, click on “View” and then “Devices by Driver”. Find the driver named “oemXXX.inf (XboxGameControllerDriver.inf)” where the “XXX” will be a specific number on your PC. Right-click on that driver and click “Uninstall”. [Click to Do (Preview)] The following known issues will be fixed in future updates to Windows Insiders: Windows Insiders on AMD or Intel™-powered Copilot+ PCs may experience long wait times on the first attempt to perform intelligent text actions in Click to Do after a new build or model update. [Improved Windows Search] [REMINDER] For improved Windows Search on Copilot+ PCs, it is recommended that you plug in your Copilot+ PC for the initial search indexing to get completed. You can check your search indexing status under Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows. [Taskbar & System Tray] [NEW] In some cases, taskbar icons may appear small even though the setting to show smaller taskbar buttons is configured as “never”. [File Explorer] The following are known issues for AI actions in File Explorer: Narrator scan mode may not work properly in the action result canvas window for the Summarize AI action for Microsoft 365 files when reading bulleted lists. As a workaround, you can use Caps + Right key to navigate. [Widgets] Until we complete support for pinning in the new widgets board experience, pinning reverts you back to the previous experience. [Graphics] [NEW] When connecting your PC to some older Dolby Vision displays, in some cases you might see severe discoloration. You can navigate to Settings > System > Display > HDR turn off “Use Dolby Vision mode” as a workaround to resolve the issue or disconnect the display. You can find the announcement post on the official Windows Blogs website. Source Hope you enjoyed this news post. Thank you for appreciating my time and effort posting news every day for many years. 2. Following the release of the latest Windows 11 Release Preview build, Microsoft is dropping two more updates for Windows Insiders in the Dev and Beta Channels. It is one of those occasions when two channels receive identical builds with the same changelog. Those testing Windows 11 in the Dev Channel can download build 26200.5603 (KB5058488), and for Beta Channel users, Microsoft released build 26120.4151 (KB5058486). These updates contain many new features, including AI actions in File Explorer, redesigned Windows Widgets, the new Advanced page in the Settings app, and more. One of the biggest changes in today's builds is AI actions in File Explorer (announced at Build 2025). Now, you can right-click a file, select AI actions, and pick one of the available options on your device, like Bing Visual Search, background blur, object erase, background removal, and more. For now, AI actions are only available for image files (JPG, JPEG, and PNG), but soon, Microsoft will bring AI actions support to Microsoft 365 files, allowing you to summarize files, create FAQs, and more. Next is the Advanced page in the Settings app, which replaces the old For Developers and brings some of the features previously available in the discontinued Dev Home app. You can learn more about it here. In the latest builds, the new page adds the ability to remove folder path limitations, enable virtual environments, and control various File Explorer features, such as GitHub integration. Windows Widgets are also getting some love with today's updates. Microsoft is experimenting with a redesigned experience that offers a more organized, personalized, and engaging feed, including stories curated by Copilot. Just keep in mind that some of the existing features, like widget pinning and the ability to turn off the feed, are not yet available in the redesigned variant. If you do not like the new variant, you can easily go back to the old one. Another important change in builds 26200.5603 and 26120.4151 is the so-called "User Interaction-Aware CPU Power Management." This OS-level change aims to reduce power consumption and improve battery life. Windows can detect user inactivity and apply various power-management policies to ensure it uses as little power as possible when idling. Once you are back at your PC, Windows will be able to spin everything back up. Finally, the Share UI, which recently received a built-in image editor, can now let you select the compression level for images when sharing them (0-100). New Windows 11 Dev and Beta builds are not only about new features. They pack some useful fixes as well (gradual rollout): [General] Fixed an issue where core Windows surfaces were not able to load in safe mode (File Explorer, Start menu, and others) after latest flights. [Start menu] Fixed an issue causing Start menu to be blank for some Insiders in the previous flight. [File Explorer] Fixed an issue where if File Explorer was maximized and you clicked the new tab button it would unmaximize the window. [Settings] Fixed an issue related to loading Bluetooth information which could lead to Settings and Quick Settings crashes. Fixed an issue where you couldn’t switch active hours from manually to automatic in Settings > Windows Update. Fixed an issue which was causing Settings > Personalization > Lock screen to crash for some Insiders. And here is the list of known issues and bugs: [General] After you do a PC reset under Settings > System > Recovery, your build version may incorrectly show as Build 26100 instead of Build 26200. This will not prevent you from getting future Beta Channel updates, which will resolve this issue. [Improved Windows Search] [REMINDER] For improved Windows Search on Copilot+ PCs, it is recommended that you plug in your Copilot+ PC for the initial search indexing to get completed. You can check your search indexing status under Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows. [Start menu] We’re investigating reports that clicking your profile picture isn’t opening the Account Manager for some Insiders after the last couple of flights. [File Explorer] [NEW] Narrator scan mode may not work properly in the action result canvas window for the Summarize AI action for Microsoft 365 files when reading bulleted lists. As a workaround, you can use Caps + Right key to navigate. [NEW] When your Windows display language is configured with a right-to-left language, the action result canvas displays text from left to right for AI actions for Microsoft 365 files. [Task Manager] After adding the new CPU Utility column, you may notice that System Idle Process always shows as 0. The CPU graphs in the Performance page are still using the old CPU utility calculations. [Narrator] We are investigating an issue where the richer image descriptions on your Copilot+ PC with Narrator do not work. [Voice Access] We are investigating an issue where support for more descriptive and flexible language on Copilot+ PCs does not work as expected. 8. Back in 2023, Microsoft introduced a new feature in the Snipping Tool called Text Actions, which can detect text in captured screenshots. This feature allowed users to easily copy text from any image and use it for various purposes. Today, Microsoft announced a new update to the Snipping Tool app for Windows 11 Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels. This version 11.2503.27.0 update brings the popular Text Extractor feature to the Snipping Tool capture bar. This eliminates the extra step of taking a screenshot to copy the required text, as users can now directly copy text from any image that appears on the screen. To use this new capability, users can open the Snipping Tool app or use the Win + Shift + S keyboard shortcut and click the new “Text Extractor” button in the toolbar. Once the button is pressed, users can select the region they would like to scan for text and then manually select the text to copy. Users can also click the “Copy all text” button in the toolbar to copy all text within the selected region. The “More options” dropdown menu in the toolbar will have the following two options: “Remove line breaks” from copied text. Enable “Automatically copy text,” which dismisses the Snipping Tool sooner and automatically copies all text in the selected region directly to the clipboard. Last month, Microsoft added another neat feature to the Snipping Tool app. The new Draw & Hold experience allows users to easily create clean lines and shapes. To use this feature, users should select the pen tool and draw a line, arrow, rectangle, or oval over the screenshot. Holding the cursor or pen still for a moment before releasing the shape will convert the stroke into a well-formed shape. Users can then resize, move, or adjust it as needed. 11. Windows 11's Start menu is one of the reasons many customers do not want to abandon Windows 10 and upgrade to Windows 11. However, it appears that Microsoft is finally ready to fix that with a seriously massive Start menu redesign. The just-released Windows 11 preview builds from the Dev and Beta Channels contain a big Start menu rework that fixes several complaints about its current implementation. Microsoft is finally ditching a two-section design in favor of a single scrollable view. Your pins and recommendations sit on top, while the All Apps list is right below them—simply start scrolling, and you are good to go browse all installed apps, no more clicking the "All" button. Another thing that will make a lot of Windows 11 users happy is the ability to turn off the "Recommended" section for good and keep only pinned apps and folders. This has been a big point of criticism during all these years, and Microsoft is finally adhering to customer feedback. The reworked Start menu was spotted by the eagle-eyed Windows Insider phantomofearth on X: You can turn on the new Start menu in the latest Dev and Beta builds by doing the following: Download ViveTool from GitHub and unpack the files in a convenient and easy-to-find folder. Run Command Prompt as Administrator and navigate to the folder containing the ViveTool files with the CD command. For example, if you have placed ViveTool in C:\Vive, type CD C:\Vive. Type vivetool /enable /id:49402389,49221331,47205210,48433719 and press Enter. Restart your computer. Microsoft has not announced it yet, as it is probably not ready for prime time by the company's standards. Source Hope you enjoyed this news post. 13. Microsoft has released a new Windows 11 preview build in the Insider program. Build 26200.5516 is now available in the Dev Channel with a massive changelog for regular and Copilot+ PCs. In addition to new features like a redesigned system crash UI, Narrator improvements, and more, today's build removes the popular bypassnro command that people use to set up Windows 11 without internet. 14. Microsoft has released an interesting Dev Channel update today with a new build, 26200.5510, under KB5054148. The release is meant as a transitionary update as the company explains that the Dev channel is "jumping ahead" to 26200 series. Microsoft writes: Thus the new build does not have any new changes or improvements but it does note some new known issues: You can find the official blog post here on Microsoft's website. 15. The latest Windows 11 preview build marks the start of a new range of builds intended to test underlying platform work for version 24H2 (and probably 25H2.) Microsoft has confirmed that it will begin testing new behind-the-scenes platform changes for Windows 11 with Insiders in the Dev Channel via a new series of builds in the 26200 range. This is likely intended to lay early groundwork for version 25H2, which is expected to release later this year. According to my sources, Qualcomm's upcoming Snapdragon X2 SoC requires platform changes that were previously only available in the Windows Canary Channel. Microsoft looks to be backporting those platform changes to the Dev Channel, which should allow X2-powered devices to run Germanium-based versions of Windows 11. Germanium is the name of the underlying platform release that Windows 11 version 24H2 is based on. Microsoft is yet to confirm if version 25H2 will be based on the same platform release, but the backporting of platform changes from the Active Development Branch to Germanium certainly suggests it could be. Of course, there will likely be other platform changes and improvements backported to Germanium which will benefit all users. Platform improvements often introduce performance and security enhancements, in addition to quality of life updates and bug fixes. Sharing the same platform release across version 24H2 and 25H2 means Microsoft can easily service both simultaneously with bug fixes and feature updates without too much extra work or overhead. It also means the update process from 24H2 to 25H2 will be much faster, smaller, and less risky for end users. Microsoft has been keen to reduce fragmentation between different Windows platform releases. The company currently has three different supported platform releases for client in the market: Vibranium, Nickel, and Germanium. Vibranium is what Windows 10 is based on, and Nickel is what Windows 11 version 23H2 is based on. With Windows 10's support ending in October, Microsoft could use this as an opportunity to get as many Windows users onto the same platform release as possible. It looks like Germanium will be that platform release, should Microsoft not ship the Selenium for client. Version 25H2 is yet to be formally announced, but we know it's coming in the second half of the year. Interestingly, support for both Windows 11 version 23H2 and Windows 10 version 22H2 ends later this year, so this may be the perfect time for Microsoft to push to get everyone onto the same platform release. 16. The latest Windows 11 preview builds from the Dev and Beta channels delivered some welcome changes for different parts of the operating system, plus a few unannounced improvements. One of those improvements lies within the Settings app to help users better understand their PC hardware capabilities. Another change will help you keep the Start menu neat and organized. In Windows 11 builds 26120.3576 and 22635.5090, Microsoft implemented a new method to move apps around and create new folders. You can right-click a pinned app and select "Move left" or "Move right." Of course, you can always drag an app with your mouse or finger, but this method sometimes behaves a bit unreliable, so a simple move left and right command will help in this regard. In addition to moving apps around, the updated Start menu makes Start menu folders more apparent. In the Stable build, creating a folder in the Start menu requires dragging one app onto another. With the latest preview update, you can right-click an app and select the option to create a new folder or move the program to an existing one. Microsoft has not mentioned all those improvements in release notes, but you can force-enable them with the ViVeTool app, assuming you are already on build 26120.3576 or 22625.5090: Download ViveTool from GitHub and unpack the files in a convenient and easy-to-find folder. Launch Command Prompt as administrator. Navigate to the folder containing the ViveTool files with the CD command. For example, if you have placed ViveTool in C:\Vive, type CD C:\Vive. Type vivetool /enable /id:50472543,50472600 and press Enter. Restart your computer. The new commands join other improvements that Microsoft is currently preparing for the Start menu. They include new layouts for the "All apps" list, the ability to launch Snap groups from the Start menu, and more.
